  2. Arthropod • Members of the phylum Arthropoda • Appeared more than 600 million years ago • Arthropods have a segmented body, a tough exoskeleton, and jointed appendages

  3. Reproduction • Internal Fertilization • Some males have a reproductive organ that places sperm inside females • Some males deposit a sperm packet that is picked up by the females • External Fertilization • Takes place outside the female’s body • Occurs when females release eggs in to external environment and males shed sperm around the eggs

  4. Growth and development • When they outgrow their exoskeletons, arthropods undergo periods of molting • Molting occurs when an arthropod sheds its entire exoskeleton and manufactures a larger one to take its place • Process can take up several hours • Most arthropods useally molt several times between childhood and adulthood • To protect themselves from predators, they usually hide during this period

  5. Crustaceans • Typically have two pairs of branched antennae, two or three body sections, and chewing mouthparts called mandibles

  6. Spiders and relatives • Include, Horseshoe crabs, spiders, ticks, and scorpions are chelicerates. • They have mouthparts called chelicerae and two body sections, and nearly all have four pairs off walking legs

  7. Insects and their relatives • Centipedes, millipedes, and insects are all uniramians. • Have jaws, one pair of antennae, and unbranched appendages • Centipedes are carnivores whose mouth parts include a pair of venomous claws • Millipedes have a highly segmented body with two pairs of legs and are very timid creatures
