  1. Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate By: Lauren Edmunds, Danielle Saraiva, and Edith Pineda

  2. Characteristics/Symptoms • Cleft lip: split of upper lip. • Cleft Palate: split of roof of the mouth. • Can occur on one side of upper lip, severe cleft may extend through the base of the nose. • Symptoms can be change in nose shape, failure to gain weight, feeding problems, flow of milk through nasal passages during feeding, misaligned teeth, poor growth, recurrent ear infections, and speech difficulties.

  3. Diagnostic • Cleft lip or Palate is not always detected prenatally during a routine ultrasound. • If discovered the mother may be put into high risk pregnancy. More ultrasounds will be performed to verify the diagnosis. • Physical examination of the mouth, nose, and palate confirms a cleft lip or cleft palate. • Medical tests may be done to rule out other possible health conditions.

  4. What Causes Cleft Palate? • Cleft lip or cleft palate is a birth defect marked by a split or cleft in the roof of the mouth, generally accompanied by a cleft in the lip. Cleft palate and lip occur when the tissues that form the palate and lip fail to fuse (unite) during the early weeks of an unborn child’s development. • A cleft palate may involve both the hard palate—the bony tissue that makes up the front part of the mouth’s roof—and the soft palate—the tissue that forms the rear part of the roof of the mouth. Alternatively, a cleft may involve the soft palate only.

  5. Can You Prevent Getting This? • It can’t be prevented because it happens in the mother, but it can be fixed in some cases. Doctors can perform surgery to close clefts of the palate and lip.

  6. Cures/Treatment • They usually close a cleft lip during the first three months of life to produce minimal scarring. Surgery on the palate usually occurs at about the age of 1. • The child usually stays in the hospital 3 to 5 days after surgery. • The reason for the surgery happening in early life is so the child’s speech will develop normally. • Sometimes a prosthetic device is temporally used to close the palate so the baby can feed and grow until surgery can be done.

  7. Organizations • The Cleft Palate Foundation (CPF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to optimizing the quality of life for individuals affected by facial birth defects.
