NCSX Emerging Priorities

This document outlines the plan to address the overspending issue in NCSX for FY06, including cutbacks and resolutions for various tasks and challenges. It also highlights the need for magnetic alignment, specifications and assembly drawings, facility layout review, and other key priorities. The deadline for completion is June 9, and the document addresses the necessary resources, facility readiness, coil testing plan, and management coordination.

  1. NCSX Emerging Priorities May 12, 2006

  2. NCSX is in serious danger of overspending this year which we cannot do Strykowsky to outline plan forward Cutbacks to avoid FY06 overspending

  3. Scale back Station 1 work in FY06 per RLS discussion Fabrication of Station 2 tooling postponed to FY07 Resolve practice rigging (Lehman Review comment) Need plan for magnetic alignment Need to identify specifications and assembly drawings to be prepared to support FPA Need to review facility layout. Determine if any work has to be done elsewhere. Field Period Assembly

  4. Keep ahead of the wave on Type B part drawings. Expedite critical procurements. Complete R&D and design of inboard shear plates Resolve issues with balance of coil-to-coil hardware (TGB peer review) Convert tapped holes to studs on tee in high stress region of Type B MCWF? Finish design of coil assemblies (plumbing, shell over lead area, etc.) Modular Coil Design

  5. Resolve extra Station 1 issue through quantitative process studies (Lehman Review recommendation) Resolve issues of additional testing AC inductance testing to ferret out turn-to-turn shorts (Lehman Review comment), proper connection of jumpers Metrology backup for Raftopoulos Modular Coil Fabrication

  6. Deadline for completion is June 9 What is the plan? What is needed when by whom to support the plan? Facility readiness (cryostat; electrical leads; nitrogen supply and venting; and data acquisition) Strain gage performance Strain gage locations and predictive analysis Electrical insulators - resolve attachment Electrical current feeds and warm-to-cold transition Coil test plan (base plan; incremental testing; interpretation and documentation of results) Resolve issue of testing A1 and B1 (Lehman Review comment) C1 Testing

  7. Trim coils Need to pick set for MIE project Need to plan work (if any) for other trim coil options, e.g. mounting on modular coil shell PF coils Need plan to resolve procurement and conductor issues TF coils Get TF production off to a good start. Make sure processes for requesting deviations, reporting nonconformances, and receiving technical direction are well understood by the supplier (MK today) Conventional Coils

  8. Dimensional verification Need to know what we have in VVSA-1, especially in the flange area and fix orientation Do we need to provide metrology support for MTM? Complete VV final design Need to identify what work remains in order to close Job 1203 Vacuum Vessel

  9. Verify that each subassembly is sound before integrating into next higher assembly (Lehman Review recommendation) Make sure verifications in specs are being incorporated into procedures Track verification results Develop ITER transition plan Management (Nelson, Heitzenroeder, Johnson, et al) Coordinate design, analysis, and systems engineering roll-off w/emerging ITER needs Management/Systems Engineering

  10. Complete Structures PD Develop TF interface design Review baseline design w/results from global model Re-design as a weldment (save $) Complete Electrical Power PD Finalize coil resistance and inductance parameters Verify capability to meet First Plasma requirements with PSCAD model Finalize SRD Resolve 45T crane capacity issue based on Whiting/Washington Group studies Other
