Today: • Review 20.1 • Video clips Hitler • Review 20.2 • Video clips of Blitzkrieg SWBAT describe the advancement of Hitler and the Nazi party through Europe by reading and answering questions on ch. 20.2– WWII and constructing a map of advancements and control during WWII.

Notes Title: World War II • Please read “The Storyteller” Page 600 --and do your best at answering the historical significance questions. • Look at the timeline and copy it in your notes. • Turn to page 602 and begin reading “The Path to War.” • Answer the questions on the handout (on the podium-front and back.) • Also take a map from the podium. Read the directions on the back.

  8. Tuesday 4/15 • RAP • How did the U.S help the war effort before actually fighting? • What was the blitzkrieg? • What was the blitz? • Today: • Review Ch. 2o.2 • Review beginning of Ch. 20.3 “A Global Conflict”

Review Ch. 20.2 War in Europepages 607-612 • Please open your textbook to page 607 • Please answer on a separate piece of paper. • Write out the complete sentence and underline your answer. • When you have completed your reading and questions please work on your map. • If we have time we will watch short clips of US preparation and US / Japanese relations.

  10. Sanctions– economic measures put on Italy by the League of Nations in response to Italy occupying Ethiopia… did not work. Why? • US put sanctions on Japan…did not work.

  11. Appeasement– Neville Chamberlain thought a policy of appeasement, granting concessions for peace, would work with Hitler to prevent further expansion and war… did not work. Why?

  12. Blitzkrieg– “lightening war”—German strategy aimed at taking the enemy by surprise. Used against Poland on September 1, 1939…worked because it was quick and efficient.

  13. Blitz – a series of air raids used on London in the Battle of Britain. Luftwaffe dropped 70,000 fire bombs. RAF kept Hitler from gaining ground in England.

  14. Cash n carry policy – Great Britain traded cash for greatly needed supplies– would allow the U.S. to supply the British without risking the loss of American neutrality. Paid cash and provided own transportation.

  15. Lend lease -- authorized the President to lend war equipment to any country whose defense he deemed vital to national security.

  16. Atlantic Charter – Roosevelt and Churchill met on a British battleship off the Newfoundland coast to discuss war aims. Joint declaration—similar to Wilson’s 14 points, but only had 9.

  18. A Global Conflict • As a class we will popcorn read the Invasion of the Soviet Union. • Copy down the timeline on the top of the page. • Take notes on • Operation Barbarossa • Scorched earth policy • Moscow, Kiev, and Leningrad—notes on when, etc.
