  1. Hydrates

  2. What is a hydrate? • Crystalline solid with water molecules trapped in the solid state structure. This is actually a gas hydrate

  3. Barium Chloride Dihydrate BaCl2∙2H2O • For every one formula unit of barium chloride there are two water molecules attached to it.

  4. Dehydration of BaCl2· 2H2O

  5. Find the % Water in Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate • Write the formula MgSO4∙7H2O

  6. Find the % Water in Magnesium Sulfate Pentahydrate 2. Calculate the molar mass. 1 Mg = 1 x 24.31 g = 24.31g 1 S = 1 x 32.07 g = 32.07 g 4 O = 4 x 16.00 g = 64.00 g 14 H = 14 x 1.01 g = 14.14 g 7 O = 7 x 16.00 g = 112.00 g

  7. Molar Mass of MgSO4∙7H2O 246.52 grams

  8. % MgSO4

  9. % H2O

  10. Equation for the dehydration of magnesium sulfate pentahydrate

  11. An Experiment Determine the Formula of a Hydrate Same set-up as the magnesium oxide lab. Measure a mass of copper(II) sulfate hydrate, heat, and re-measure the mass of the anhydrous compound.
