High School Subculture • Why they exist – a means of resisting power, the result of media labeling, a challenge to dominant culture and ideas – different theories exist • Main features: style, fashion, music, material possessions • A means of gaining an identity for many trying to figure themselves out!

  3. The Players (girls) • Main roles: “queen bee”, “followers” and “outcasts” • Queen bee = leader; charismatic, charming, attractive, usually wealthy (in some form), powerful, envied • Outcast = someone who is not perceived as fitting in, disliked by queen bee, perhaps an introvert

  4. Effects • Queen bee = power, friendship, increased self-esteem • Followers = membership, increased social life, closer friendships • Outcasts = bullying, depression, suicide, stress, low self-esteem, violence

  5. Hazing • What is it? • “a ritualistic test, which may constitute harassment, abuse or humiliation to perform meaningless tasks” (wikipedia) • Not just done by girls – can happen in any group where “initiation” is required, and does happen in some form in most social groups • Shocking Teen Girls Hazing Incident • Article

  6. Effects • Some argue that incidences of hazing, bullying and humiliation that often come as a result of clique behaviours are responsible for events such as Columbine

  7. Caught on Film • Heathers • Mean Girls • Carrie • Jawbreaker • The Breakfast Club • Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion • Notice a trend???? Most center around female relationships! Why?
