  17. ELECTRICAL SAFETY Electricity is a versatile form of energy. It is safe, reliable & efficient but like any form of energy, it can cause harm when improperly handled. Electrical hazards are common on construction projects.

  18. ELECTRICITY ON CONSTRUCTION SITE • Construction extremely dependent on electrical power • Equipment, tools, lights, utilities run on electricity • Voltage on site 120 & 240 volts • Installation can be temporary or permanent

  19. ELECTRICAL TERMS • Electrical circuit – path of electricity as it flows • Conductor – a substance that has low resistance to the passage of electric current • Non-conductor – a substance with high resistance to flow of electricity • Volts – measure of difference in electrical pressure between two points • Amperes – measure of flow of electrical current • Ohms – measure of resistance to flow of electricity in a conductor

  20. ELECTRICAL HAZARDS WARNING SIGNS: • Dim or flickering lights • Arcs, sparks, buzzing sounds • Smell of burning plastic • Warm receptacle plates • Damaged insulation • Frequent tripping of circuit breakers • Blown fuses

  21. SPECIFIC ELECTRIC HAZARD • Equipment contact with overhead power lines • Short circuits • Ground fault • Insulation failures

  22. HEALTH EFFECTS • Burns • Shock/muscular spasm • Fibrillation • Cardiac arrest • Fall or hit other object

  23. CONTROLLING ELECTRICAL HAZARDS AT SOURCE: • Lock Out Tag Out ( LOTO) • Install enclosure or barrier • Equipment testing & troubleshooting

  24. CONTROLLING ELECTRICAL HAZARDS AT PATH: • Portable barriers like rubber blankets • Grounding, fuse circuit breakers • GFCI • Suitable outdoor electric cords • Warning sign • Color code

  25. CONTROLLING ELECTRICAL HAZARDS AT WORKER: • Qualified electricians • Communications • PPE • Employee training • Safe work practices & procedures

  26. CONFINED SPACES • Entry & exit are limited by location, design or construction • Presence of hazardous airborne contamination • Too much or too little oxygen

  27. EXAMPLES OF CONFINED SPACES WORK TYPE: • Chemical & petrochemical projects • Sewage handling systems • Heavy industrial projects • Water treatment plants • General construction

  28. EXAMPLES OF CONFINED SPACES SPECIFIC CONFINED SPACES: • Tanks, vessels, pipes, pumps • Pits, settling tanks, services • Manholes, pumping areas, digesters • Vaults, basements, silos
