What is a Gearbox? • A box of gears • More specifically, an assembly to which a prime mover (such as a motor, gasoline engine, etc) is mounted to, and interconnects with gears for the purposes of speed and torque alterations (See Basic Practical Mechanics presentation) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W.   5. Building the Gearbox: The Pinion • Mount the pinion gear to the motor shaft – In the case of the DCM-216 and GR-5, the motor shaft must be built up to fit snugly with the gear. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  6. Attaching the pinion • Epoxy the pinion gear to the motor (Use epoxy. Glue gun and super glue may not hold.) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  7. The Gearbox • Mount the motor to the Gearbox using the front mounting screws. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  12. How fast does it wind a string? • To calculate, we need to know the number of times the winch shaft turns per unit time, and the circumference of the winch. ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd

  13. Calculating Shaft Speed • Assumptions • Motor RPM = 6000 RPM • Gearing Ratio 1:5 (pinion:gear) ENGR-162/12 - Benjamin W. Kidd
