  2. Study Skills Learning Target: I will review and identify conjunctions. Conjunctions • A conjunction joins words or groups of words • There are two types of conjunctions: CoordinatingandCorrelative

Coordinating Conjunctions • When a coordinating conjunction joins two sentences, a commais used before the conjunction • A common error is to omit this comma • Another error is to put a comma before a conjunction joining two phrases For Example: Sentence: John opened the icebox, and he took out the salami. Phrase: John opened the icebox and took out the salami.

Coordinating Conjunctions • The remaining coordinating conjunction, nor, is in a class by itself. • It requires a negative in the first sentence and reversalof the subject and verb in the second sentence. For Example: John does notlove Mary, nor does Fred love Alicia.

Correlative Conjunctions • The main difference is that correlative conjunctions are two-part conjunctions. • The most common correlative conjunctions are both…and; either…or; neither…nor and not only…but also. • All four correlative conjunctions can be used with words and phrase

Interjections • An interjectionis an exclamatory word that expresses emotion. • It has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence. • An interjectioncan NEVER be a verb and therefore can never be expanded to a full sentence by an understood you (imperative sentences - like “Stop!” and “Duck!”)
