  1. South Africa Redoubles Efforts Against AIDSThe New York Timesby Celia W. Dugger-Currently, there are about 5.7 Million H.I.V-positive citizens in South Africa. South Africa is said to be denying and delaying the confrontation of this problem, however, UN officials describe current actions to be the “largest and fastest expansion of AIDS services ever attempted by any nation”-President Jacob Zuma set the example by getting tested and showing the nation by appearing in the newspaper across the country doing so. In South Africa, there is a “silence and a stigma” against the epidemic, as told by Mr. Zuma. -According to the article, there are currently 1500 new infections a day-The goal of this effort is to have all 4,333 public clinics dispensing AIDS medicine

  2. Article Findings • The former president of South Africa Thabo Mbeki questioned whether H.I.V caused AIDS and suggested that anti-retroviral drugs were harmful. Harvard researchers estimated that the government could have prevented the premature deaths of 365,000 people during the last decade if it had provided the drugs to AIDS patients and medicines that help stop pregnant women from infecting their babies. • The WHO recommended circumcision as a way to reduce a mans risk of contracting H.I.V by more than half. • Full staff training including allowing nurses, hospital and clinics to dispense anti-retroviral drugs. • US pays 620 million, South African ministry has budgeted 1 billion and currently the Clinton Foundation is working on negotiation anti-retroviral drugs. • Critique There are cultural practices that unknowingly help increase the risk of getting HIV. There is a lack of education regarding HIV/AIDS that hinder the prevention of acquiring the disease.
