  1. BALANCE – Finding It In A High-Performing Classroom Boyle County Teacher Academy

  2. Content Mastery • How do you guarantee that students are mastering the content? • Common Unit Assessments • Exit Slips • ACT/EXPLORE/PLAN • KPREP

  3. Content Mastery • What is the best teaching structure to guarantee content mastery? 1st - Keep a laser focus on your standards 2nd - Plan lessons in “Steps In An Ideal Lesson” format 1) Flashback 2) Learning Target 3) Hook 4) New Content 5) Check For Understanding 6) Learning Target 7) Formative Assessment 3rd - Teach in small groups as often as possible, especially with kids who struggle 4th - Have a system for learning target intervention

  4. Skills – Deeper Learning • How do you guarantee that, in addition to content mastery, students are acquiring the skills necessary for success in their lives? • Rubrics • Performance • Presentations of Learning Examples: critical thinking, problem solving, time management, digital literacy, collaboration, communication skills, perseverance, flexibility, etc.

  5. Skills – Deeper Learning • What is the best teaching structure to guarantee development of skills? - Build these opportunities into some or many of your units: 1) 21st Century PBL 2) LDC 3) MDC Notes: • These experiences are important in all classrooms in order to achieve balance. But, in a performance-based classroom (Spanish, Art, Music), they are even more vital and should happen more often. • Embedded into a unit, make sure these experiences are part of “the main course, not just dessert”

  6. Skills – Deeper Learning • Don’t forget the 3 R’s of 21st Century PBL! • Rigor – anchor your project in the standards • Real Work – make sure your project requires students to do real work that real people do in real jobs that are available • Relevance – at the end of the project, students should present their work to a relevant audience (Science Fair Model)

  7. Getting Results and Providing Opportunities The Bottom Line: It is fantastic to be a high performer on KPREP, and we are proud of it. But it is not enough. We owe it to our students to provide the best in all endeavors - a balance of high-level content mastery, skill development, and world-class opportunities in areas like foreign language, STEM, and the arts. Moving forward, what can you do in your classroom to give students the balance that will impact their lives in a powerful way?

  8. Final Note • Preparing Your Classroom For Accountability (See handout)
