  1. School Violence • The majority of injuries at school are unintentional, not violent. • Although shootings in U.S. schools have captured media and public attention, homicides and suicides rarely are associated with schools. Fewer than 1% of homicides and suicides among children and adolescents are school-related.

  2. School Violence • During 1992-1994, 105 school-associated violent deaths occurred in the U.S., including 85 homicides and 20 suicides. • These deaths occurred in 25 states, in both primary and secondary schools, and in communities of all sizes. • Approximately 72% of the victims were students, and 83% were male.

  3. School Violence • Firearms were the method of injury in 77% of the fatalities. • Approximately 30% of fatal injuries occurred inside school building, and 35% occurred outdoors on school property.

  4. School Violence • The remaining fatalities occurred off campus, either on the way to or from school or at or in transit to or from school-sponsored events. • Approximately the same number of students die in school bus-related crashes each year as die from school-related homicides.
