  2. Group 12 Product History • The average Vacuum design has not changed significantly over 20 years… 2010 1990 • Dyson 1995 • 6579-2 Manufacturing Date: 2008 • The fact that nothing was really special about the 6579-2 model made it cheaper than other vacuums.

  3. Group 12 Revisions and Motivation Proposed Creation of a product family: • Small Metal Chain to Replace the Current Rubber Belt: • Slightly more costly than the last revision. • Chain belt would likely last the lifetime of the vacuum cleaner • Parts needed: • Small Steel Chain • Teethed Gears • Chain Guard • Spring Influenced Retractable Cord System: • Mounted on the exterior of the vacuum. • Added user convenience • Cost is not affected by much.

  4. Group 12 Advantages & Disadvantages • Advantages: • Less Overall Maintenance • Use of Recycled Metal vs. Rubber • Saved time for lazy Americans • Disadvantages: • Slight production cost increase.(limited to around 15%) • Use of Grease and other Metals sparking environmental concerns. • New Production Processes Influenced Factors: Societal: Convenience Economical: Frequency of maintenance Environmental: Introduction of new & Recycled Materials

  5. Group 12 Where to go from here… • There will be a need for gathering additional Information. • Bissell might want to weigh out the benefits of outsourcing and purchasing some materials. • Additional marketing research will be needed to see if customer is willing to pay an extra $10 for added convenience and reduced lifetime maintenance costs. • Technology already exist so only design revisions are needed for implementation of new model.
