Benchmark Standards Review • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98V9cEYe6-A After watching: • Write down on your sentence strip three words that you could use to describe what kind of person Mr. Bean appears to be. • Why does Mr. Bean behave the way he does? Write your answer on your sentence strip.

  2. character traits Definition: words that describe what kind of a person a character is; words that describe personal qualities Examples: kind, cruel, loving, hateful, meticulous, careless, lazy, hardworking

  3. character motivation Definition: the character’s motive or motivation is what causes the character to act or behave as he or she does in a story Examples: fear, love, greed, hunger

  4. Read the excerpt from TioNano on p. 272 After reading: On your sentence strip, write down three character traits that could describe what kind of person TioNano is. Then write down three character traits for the grandmother.

  5. character motivation Definition: the character’s motive or motivation is what causes the character to act or behave as he or she does in a story • What is TioNano’s motivation for visiting his sister so often? • What is the grandmother’s motivation for hiding when he comes? Write your answers in complete sentences on your sentence strip. Use both sides if you need them.

  6. inference Definition: a logical assumption that can be made based on observation, knowledge or experience Example: If you observe a little girl crying, you can infer that she is sad or upset (even if she does not say so). If you observe a little boy having a tantrum, you may infer that he did not get something he wanted.

  7. generalization Definition: a broad statement or idea based on a small number of examples Example: After reading the short stories “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mann” and “Harrison Bergeron,” you wrote a quick write about whether it was easier to hide things about yourself to get along with other people or to be yourself 100% of the time. Your answer was “a broad statement” based on two stories you read (a small number of examples).

Read the excerpt from Uncles on p. 273 After reading: On your sentence strip, write down answers to these questions. • What can you infer about Susanna’s feelings toward her aunts, based on the excerpt from Uncles? 2. Both excerpts describe characters who are part of families. What generalization (broad statement or idea) can you make about how families are based on these two texts?
