  3. Cherokee CULTURE • Family is the center of life. • Numbers 4 and 7 are found numerous times in myths, stories, and ceremonies. • Number 7 represents height of purity which is hard to achieve. Only ones who have achieved this is the owl, cougar, pine, cedar, spruce, holly, and laurel trees. • Sacred things are wrapped in deerskin or white cloth and kept in a special box or place. • Spiritual beings: when someone dies their souls continue to live as ghosts.

  4. Cherokee DRESS Men: short gown (hunting skirt) made of deerskin, beaded belt, coarse homespun pantaloons, and an upper part drapped over left shoulder. (in winter these were made of panther, bear, otter, beaver, and buckskin) Women: wrap-around skirt of skin (deer or other small game sewn together, winter was buffalo calfskin), and an upper part drapped over left shoulder. Both: Mocassins

  7. Cherokee THE AREA WHERE THEY LIVED Originally: Southern Appalachian Mountains, North and South Carolina, North Georgia and Alabama, Southwest Virginia, and Cumberland Basin of Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Alabama After Removal: Northeast Oklahoma

Choctaw CULTURE • Mound builders • Rapidly adding modernity, developed a written language, and new farming methods. • Agriculturists of Southern Indians • Mostly vegetarians. • Believed in good and evil spirits • Cleaned the bones of the dead before putting them in boxes or baskets in the bone-houses. This was done by the older men who grew their nails out very long. • Influenced heavily by Spanish • Placed poles by new graves and then hung hoops and wreaths on them to help spirit ascent.

  9. Choctaw DRESS Men: long shirt with bright colors, blanket, leg wrappings, and moccasins Women: red cloth dress/ dresses decorated to how that woman wanted. By the Trail of Tears: they had completely adopted the European dress.

Chickasaw CULTURE • Thought to be a lot like Choctaw • Hunting was a religious event • Did not eat much meat • Warriors of American Southeast • Anyone who messed with them might not have lived. • At each camp site they would set a pole vertically on the ground. The direction it was leaning when they awoke they would go. If the pole stayed up straight they would stay where they were.

  14. Chickasaw DRESS Men: breechcloth with thigh-high deerskin boots to protect legs from underbrush. Warriors wore a mantle of swan feathers. Women: simple short dress Both: buffalo robes in the winter

  19. Creek DRESS Men: breechcloth of deerskin Women: skirts with woven plant fibers Both: cloth drapped over left shoulder. In colder weather they wore deerskin, blankets, feather mantles. Eventually adopted European dress like the Choctaws.
