  1. Appetizer, Entrée, or Dessert? Savoring the in the Office (Or in the Wild) Arman Habegger, The University of Findlay Rick Shipman, Michigan State University

  2. What we want to serve • A Brief History of the Blackberry and Research in Motion (RIM) • What is the Blackberry? • In our work—how we can use it • Troubles?—how we can get support • Useful tools/programs—where we can get them • Seeking relaxation—games, books, news, weather and more • Self-Discovery—are you a Blackberry user or a Crackberry addict?

  3. Blackberry’s History (brief) • Check out the models at left— • Started with a pager in 1998 that used batteries • Subscribership expanded to 5 million users in 2006 • Color screen in 2003 • SureType in 2004 • Camera in 2007 • Touch screen in 2008 • Memory expands with nearly each iteration—in 2003, the 6750 had 10 mb; Storm (2008) has 8 gb; Storm2 goes to 16 gb!

  4. Blackberry Models Top (l to r) Tour (July 2009) Pearl Bold Bottom (l to r) Storm 2 (October 2009) Pearl Flip Curve

  5. Useful BB Accessories • Fold-up keyboard • USB Adapter • Cases • Protective skins • Charger cradles • Headsets • And More!

  6. Using the Blackberry--1 • Handles email and office documents • Route your office email to your BB (you can save messages, too, and then delete them in the standard listing) • Place frequently used Excel spreadsheets on your BB • Type or take a Word document with you • Update your appointments calendar directly from emails, • and synchronize between your BB and your pc • Use the BB to transport and view your Powerpoint • Have you thought perhaps of putting an • efc calculator on your BB?

  7. Using the Blackberry--2 • May provide you enterprise server connection • As a more portable “laptop” pc • “Always connected”—can call anytime, virtually anywhere • All calls “personal”—you should get the person to whom you want to talk, and no other • Has international travel capabilities in many cases • Applications continue to expand—finances, payments, banking, games • Access to various travel websites and • check-in at the airlines (limited—did any of you use your • BB to display your boarding pass?)

  8. The Blackberry vsiPhone • BB can use a wide range of network carriers; iPhone limited to AT&T • Most BB models have keyboards • BB uses standardized USB connector • Some carriers offer unlimited international BB data roaming for $40/month or less; iPhone does not • BB has expandable memory; iPhone has three fixed memory options • BB has removable/expandable battery. • BB allows programs to multitask • BB more efficiently handles a large number of address book entries. • BB is available with multiple browsers, from multiple suppliers. • See SeekingAlpha.com/article/155015 (Aug 10,2009)

  9. More about Email • Screen shots illustrate a listing of emails and an email message; at the bottom of the email message are actions one may take in response to the email—reply, forward, delete (on BB and pc, or just on BB)

  10. More about Calendar • Can synchronize with pc calendar • Can enter event/task directly to BB and synchronize to pc • Calendar can schedule event directly from an email • Time will not adjust automatically when you change time zones

  11. More about Contacts • Contacts are the individuals with whom you may be in touch on frequent or infrequent basis • BB allows inputting lots of detailed information, and portrait as well • Contacts are easy to remove if no longer needed

  12. More about Spreadsheets • At right a portion of the spreadsheet we use for awarding students • Can enter data just as you would on a pc • We exported the spreadsheet and “captured it” with a screenshot

  13. More about Documents • Transfer documents much as you would via a flash drive • Create the document on the pc, then transfer to the BB • Take the BB with you and work on revisions

  14. Syncing Made Easy • Synchronize files • Phone contacts • Emails • Notes • Calendar • Memos • Other stuff

  15. Backup Made Easy • Automate your backup or perform it manually periodically—it’s your choice • Use the BB Desktop Manager to manage the process through the USB cable (which can also serve to charge the BB battery)

  16. Useful Tidbits • If the BB freezes and won’t respond, regardless of keystroke or menu, pull the battery for a couple minutes and then reinstall • Transfer of files between the BB and pc is easier if you treat the BB as a flash drive • Maintain a separate listing of any passwords or license/registration numbers for any applications you purchase—you’ll have them if you must do a reinstall (of course you can purchase a password program to manage this!)

  17. Rearranging Your Desktop(like rearranging your furniture) • Decide what programs you will use most frequently • Decide if you have icons for programs you will not use • Add new programs from Blackberry or Crackberry and move them as you wish • You may want to put some icons into a folder—games, for example, into a folder instead of each icon on your desktop • Start moving icons around by highlighting an icon and then pressing the menu button—then begin the “move” process

  18. Useful Software • Blackberry Apps (free) • A number of applications are free and some have cost—most in the 3-5 dollar range, but some up to 20 or more • Crackberry Apps (free) • Also lots of applications, some free and some for fee, with some free trials • Tetherberry (49.95)--allowsyour BB to function as browser connection for laptop

  19. Quick Launch • A third-party software product (Nikkisoft) • Resembles the taskbar on your pc—but as a drop-down menu • Enables you to open a program from a menu instead of the “screentop” • Allows a number of organizational shortcuts • Cost is currently $4.99, and, like many other programs, can be loaded directly to your Blackberry from the website—updates are usually free • You can customize the list—select which programs to include, in what order they appear, and whether you might have subgroups

  20. QuickLaunch • QuickLaunch (4.99) provides shortcut to a variety of tasks as you define them • Open a program • Open a sub-program • Take you to a specific web page • Similar to the Task Bar on your pc desktop • Tasks that you use frequently

  21. QuickLaunch • The opening screen enables you to add applications and other functionality to a dropdown menu that you can order/reorder, create sub-groups, and most importantly, open quickly

  22. QuickLaunch • A screenshot of the menu as you might create it—you can rearrange, decide what you want to include, using the prior screen tool to build it. Then use the right or left side button to quick-launch the menu

Use them to quick load a particular • Program—QuickLaunch, for example.

All of us have read accounts of accidents occurring because the driver paid too much attention to the PDA and not enough to the business of driving. The BB is a wonderful, utilitarian device, but it can be a dangerous weapon on the street or highway. Please enjoy using it wisely.
