  3. Partner Share • What might you discover in the inner chambers of large caverns? • Why does the writer compare stalactites to “bare fangs in a gigantic jaw”? What do you think stalactites really are? • Since it takes many years for stalactites and stalagmites to form underground, how old could the caverns in this story be?

  4. Amazing Words • Spelunking- exploring caves • The boys found an old skull while spelunking in California. • Tremor- a shaking or vibrating movement • A big truck caused a tremor in the street as it drove by. • Teach your partner these words.
