  1. Journey to the Center of the Earth Name: _______________________ Group #: _____________________ Year and Section: ______________ Teacher: Mr. Baldwin Noelito I. Que Earth Science A Learner-Centered Learning Environment Module on The Earth’s Lithosphere

  2. November 7, 2009 TO: Engineer Xyz Gaia RE: Proposal to Reconstruct Laiban dam Our contacts fully endorsed you to investigate the geologic history of the area between Tanay, Rizal and Nakar, Quezon before the city builders of Quezon Province start reconstruction of the Laiban dam. This place has an important geologic landmark as stated in the documents. Attached herewith are the senate resolution, topography and soil formation, map, and pictures of the area. Your task is to determine what will be the impact in the landmark once construction pushed through and to make a scale model complete with a impact report about what could happen to the area in the future. Respectfully yours: Mr. Lex Ignacio General Manager S.Q. International 1 S.Q. International 20/F Platinum Center 262 Nadal cor. Keane st. International • You must present your findings by: • creating a pop-up booklet that will show the layers of the Earth, its physical characteristics and important data; • explaining in your scale model the impact that will be caused by the reconstruction of the Laiban Dam. It should include the effects before, during and after reconstruction of the Laiban Dam; • as an addition, you may propose plans to ensure public safety. • You will show your pop-up booklet to a small audience of peers and justify your decisions of pushing through or not with the rebuilding of the dam.

  5. WORKSHEET #1 (Individual)Name: ____________________________ Year & Section: _______ Date accomplished: __________ 4 /10 • Today we are going to begin a study of the LAYERS OF THE EARTH. Complete the first part of the chart (know) by writing what you know already about the topic. After you have finished this section, open your reference materials and quickly scan it. Use the information you learned from the notes to complete the second section (want to know). Write also how you will find a way to know what you want to know in the third box. You will complete the last section at the end of the module. You only have 15 minutes for this worksheet.

  6. WORKSHEET #2 (Group)Team #: _______ Me: _________________________Year & Section: _______ Date accomplished: __________ Apple Earth How are they alike? How are they different? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5 /20 • Brainstorm with your assigned team to answer this worksheet. Use this compare/contrast organizer to explore analogous as well as non-analogous characteristics of two concepts to the topic of LAYERS OF THE EARTH. You and your team only have 20 minutes to answer this part. So good luck and try not to waste time. How will this help you in the reconstruction of the Laiban Dam? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  7. Be ready to take down notes! 6 GREAT! You may now proceed below! NO… Website 3: Structure of the Earth http://scign.jpl.nasa.gov/learn/plate1.htm Website 4: Inside the Earth http://www.thetech.org/exhibits_events/online/quakes/inside/

  8. WORKSHEET #3 (Individual)Name: ____________________________ Year & Section: _______ Date accomplished: __________ /20 7  After you have read websites 3 & 4, answer the questions below.

  9. You are the next millionaire!!! Try to answer the Practice TestRags to Riches by clicking the website below. 8 Record your correct answers and verify which item you got wrongto find out how you fared and how well prepared for the next thing to be done. If you know how to play the game WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE this will be easy for you. If you are not sure of the right answer you have 3 hints, after that you are on your own. Be honest? Website 5: Practice Test http://www.quia.com/rr/38064.html

  11. If you got half or an amount of $_______ in your practice test, give yourself a tap on your shoulder because you are ready to proceed to the next task. After you have visited all the websites and completed all the activities, I hope you’ve learned something about the Layers of Earth. 10 But If you didn’t get half, I advise you to go back to: Website 3: Structure of the Earth Website 4: Inside the Earth to re-learn the concepts. Now, check how much you have really learned by answering Worksheet # 4as a group.

  12. WORKSHEET #4 (Group)Team #: _______ Me: _________________________Year & Section: _______ Date accomplished: __________ /20 11  Again, group yourselves with your assigned team. Use the notes that you have gathered as you were reading the different websites. Using your notes , describe the relative temperature and composition of each layer of the Earth.

  13. Are you ready for your science project? Meet with your team to discuss the necessary materials for the next activity. Art materials, cartons / illustration board, glue, markers, coloring materials. 12 Brainstorm also on how to create a pop-up booklet that describes each layer of the earth.

  14. The Project Plan: 13 Project description: In this project, your team will visualize the Earth's crust (lithosphere), mantle, and core. You will work in groups to research and design a bookletof the Earth's layers. You will also include in your plan a portion of how deep into the earth you need to dig up for the reconstruction of the Laiban dam. Project Evaluation: • Check the rubric on Slide 16 and ask for a copy of the activity sheet from your teacher. The Tasks: • Create a pop-up bookleton the layers of the Earth; • Describe Earth's layers, including inner and outer cores, mantle, and crust by mentioning their physical characteristics; • Include in your pop-up booklet a visual modelof how will the Laiban dam will appear; • Provide a hypothetical narrative impact report on the advantages and disadvantages of building a dam; • Propose plans to ensure public safety during and after reconstruction of the Laiban dam.

  16. Read the Rubrics on the next slide. Rate your team’s performance by checking which of the categories (vertical column) you think your group excelled per criteria (horizontal column) during your project making. Place your score on the right side column under Team-Rating. Be reminded that your teacher will also rate you during your lab activity and your team-rating will be compared to his.
