Accounting & Finance • One of the longest established departments of Accounting and Finance in the UK (Johnstone Smith Chair of Accountancy, 1925). • Currently 23 academic staff, including 6 Professors, with further expansion planned. • Located in the main, historic, university building, in newly refurbished accommodation.

  4. Excellence in Research • Glasgow University was rated 1st in Scotland (and 5th in UK) for Accounting and Finance research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, with 80% of our research activity was judged to be of international quality with 10% rated as world-leading.

Excellence in Teaching and Student Support • Department ranked 2nd in Scotland (Times & Independent) and 9th in the UK (Times) • National Student Survey: 95% of students overall satisfied with quality of course, well above UK average of 82%. Scores particularly high for “Staff good at explaining things” and “Staff enthusiastic about what they are teaching”.

  7. Departmental Links with Russia • Long tradition of positive relations with Russian Universities • Led to many Russian-speaking students attending Masters degree and succeed. • Have Russian-speaking members of staff

Theory & Practice • Courses mix theory and practice, and include a considerable element of research: • Aim to develop your skills in undertaking critical, independent, analysis. • Enhance knowledge and understanding, not just memorising facts. • Research-led teaching by subject specialists. • By developing your abilities to learn, we aim to prepare you for successful careers in an ever-changing world. • We also aim to provide you with solid knowledge and understanding of Accounting, Finance, Banking, or Financial Analysis

Structure and Content • All programmes 12 months full-time • All programmes comprise 6 taught courses plus research methods and a dissertation. • Induction in Mid-September • 3 courses during autumn semester • 3 courses during spring semester + research methods • 10,000 - 12,000 word dissertation over summer.

Dissertation • All programmes contain a Dissertation, and a supporting course in Research Methods. • The dissertation topic will be strongly associated to the aims of the degree programme. • It will be completed in the period from June to September. • A staff supervisor is appointed to students for their dissertation.

  12. Finance University & Glasgow University proposed agreement • Students complete 1½ years in Russia – Stage 1. • If successfully complete stage 1, and obtain required language qualification (IELTS 6.5, no element below 6), obtain exemption from semester one courses in Glasgow. • Start in Glasgow from January. • 3 courses + research methods during spring semester • 10,000 - 12,000 word dissertation over summer.

Semester 2 : 3 electives in finance, e.g.: International Financial Management; International Banking and Financial Markets; Financial Analysis & Equity Valuation; Financial Regulation and Ethics; Behavioural Finance; Mergers & Acquisitions MFin

  15. Semester 1: International Corporate Finance International Capital Markets Statistics for Business Research MSc in IFA • Semester 2: • Financial Analysis & Equity Valuation • Financial Reporting and Interpretation • Either Financial Management in Banks, or International Financial Management

  17. Semester 1: International Corporate Finance. International Corporate Governance & Accountability Management Accounting and Control Semester 2: 3 electives from: Competition Economics & Law; Governing Risk & Resilience; Human Rights & Business; Audit; Financial Regulation & Ethics; Accounting & Business Ethics; Social Accounting, Reporting & Finance MSc in GA

Semester 1: Mathematical Methods for Finance Probability & Statistical Inference (2 courses) International Capital Markets Semester 2: Financial Reporting and Interpretation Mathematical & Statistical Modelling for Finance One option from: Behavioural Finance; International Banking & Financial Markets; Financial Analysis & Equity Valuation MSc in FM

  19. Typically a combination of written coursework and examinations. Weighting varies, normally 25% coursework and 75% examination. Assessment • For all programmes, students will sit six unseen written examinations. • Three in December, and three in April/May. • Awards of Degree with Merit or Distinction available for those students achieving good results.
