  2. How does Harper Lee create atmosphere in chapter 6, when she describes the Radley House? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT LANGUAGE. AND THE EFFECT OF LANGUAGE.

  3. Short Sentences ‘Jem touched it. The gate squeaked.’ Chapter 6, pg 58. Effect: To show how quickly the action is moving. To build suspense by making the reader have to stop. To signify key points in the text.

  4. Imagery ‘the roar of a shotgun shattered the neighbourhood’ chapter 6, pg 59 The Radley house is described as ‘droopy and sick’ chapter 1 These are both uses of PERSONIFICATION Effect – Makes writing more dramatic and descriptive Helps the reader relate to the object as it is easier to picture, brings the writing to life (as if we were there)

Gothic Elements ‘ramshackle porch’ chapter 6 , pg 58 ‘two dark windows’ chapter 6, pg 58 ‘a hat rack mirror caught in the moonlight and shone eerily’ chapter 6, pg 58 ‘It was the shadow of a man with a hat on’ chapter 6, pg 59 Effect – Creates a tense and mysterious atmosphere makes the reader feel uneasy Compares the Radley House to a haunted house which illustrates how the children feel about it Alienates the Radley family from the rest of the society – couples with the theme of prejudice. Links with theme of childhood as things like this scare children easier

  6. Use of Sound ‘The gate squeaked’ – chapter 6, pg 58 ‘The step was silent’ – chapter 6, pg 59 ‘The roar of a shotgun’ – chapter 6, pg 59 Effect – Brings the writing to life Makes it easier for the reader to imagine the atmosphere Highlights the action in the scene

  7. Verbs ‘leaped’ ‘galloped’ ‘flung’ ‘tripped’ ‘dived’ – chapter 6, pg 59 Effect – Using these powerful action verbs, the author builds up an atmosphere of panic and shows the rapid movement of the children. It shows how the action is contributing to the overall atmosphere of the scene.

Do you think the techniques are successful? How? Perhaps talk about how it is relevant to the rest of the novel as this will demonstrate your knowledge of the text as a whole.
