Washington BEACH Program Recommended Decision Process for Notification Management decisions for public health and safety at recreational beaches should be based on specific water contact activities, usage, shoreline or sanitary surveys including site history and identification of possible impacts from pollution sources. Water quality monitoring for fecal contamination can be an additional tool used to investigate possible fecal contamination. It is important to communicate risk to the public reflective of actual beach conditions. ACTION ITEM Remove Signs Is average of samples BELOW 104 enterococci/100 ml? Beach is regularly sampled YES YES NO POSTED FOR MONITORING RESULTS: Beaches should be monitored weekly following a notification event. Signs can be removed after results indicate bacteria have returned to background levels. ACTION ITEM Resample Visually inspect beach for possible pollution sources. Is average of resamples BELOW 104 enterococci/100 ml? Is average of samples BELOW 276 enterococci/100 ml? YES NO NO Is average of samples BELOW 276 enterococci/100 ml YES Is there any reason to doubt the accuracy of the samples? (One result high and the remainder near background levels, or extreme low tide?) YES NO POSTED FOR SEWAGE EVENT: Signs should be removed after the problem is fixed and sufficient enough time has passed to allow for dilution and or flushing. NO Beach is not sampled A sewage event such as a CSO, pipe rupture, or mechanical failure occur or 3 illnesses are reported at one beach. POSTED FOR ILLNESSES: Beach facilities and swimming area should be examined. Refer to the sanitary/ shoreline survey. If source of illness is identified, signs may be removed when the source is gone.
