  6. Verb Form Errors (2) • Sometimes I totally confused about English grammar. Compare: English verb tenses confuse me. I am confused about English verb tenses. His silence worries me. I am worried that something bad may have happened to him. I am concerned about his health.

  7. Verb Form Errors (3) • The company did clearly deserved to obtain a large research grant to continue their innovative research. Compare: He did say that he would move my grade up to AB. I do remember that I need to send the letter by tomorrow.

  8. Verb Form Errors (4) • An effective speaker tries look directly at his or her audience. Compare: He did not want to tell me how he managed the project. Don’t bother to come over yourself.

  9. Verb Form Errors (5) • A grant writer hopes to presenting a convincing argument that clearly shows the value of a piece of research. Compare: Stop talking so loudly. This is a library. Keep working. I am sure you will get it done. You should avoid staring into its eyes or the animal may attack.

  11. Verb Form Errors (6) • After finish work, Mary likes to work out in the gym for at least an hour. Compare: Before going to school, the boy would make sure that he had got all his textbooks. Upon seeing his mother, the boy’s face lit up. I look forward to hearing from you soon. The boss has been very busy with reviewing the workers’ performance.

  12. Verb Form Errors (7) • Study all night does not always guarantee that a person will pass an exam. Compare: Seeing is believing. Talking to a professor like that is not acceptable. I learned that passing this course is not easy.

  15. Practice • (1) Aside from study for a degree, I have learned and experienced many things from be a student here. (2) First, I have had many opportunities to broaden my views. (3) By encounter people of many different backgrounds, I have learned about many different points of view. (4) I have also come understand more about the issues facing people from different countries and how people from many different cultures think. (5) Second, I have learned much about American culture and people. (6) In the United States, I have encounter many unfamiliar aspects of culture that I have never seen. (7) Also, the way American people interact is different from what I was used to in my home country. (8) I have try to understand these differences and in the future hope to be a sort of “bridge” that can connect Americans and Koreans. (9) In terms of customs, one of the best ones that I have learned is smile at people. (10) Finally, I have improved my English greatly. (11) I do not have any fear of speak English, and think in English feels very natural to me. (12) Nowadays, I even dream in English. (13) In my dreams, I speak in English even to my family! (14) In conclusion, the experience of being here has been a great asset for me. (15) When I return home after a year here, I will be a person who is more open-minded and a person who is a better “citizen of the world.”
