  3. Definition • DBA : A DBA is a person or group of persons responsible for overall control of database system.

  4. Functions of DBA • Deciding information contents of database system • Deciding storage devices to be used • Deciding users of database • Communication with the users • Deciding software to be used • Deciding backup procedure • Deciding the recovery procedure

  5. Functions Contd.. 1. Deciding information contents of database system : It is the DBA who decides different fields to be stored as a part of database. This is performed by writing schema at internal level and conceptual level.

  6. Functions Contd.. 2. Deciding storage devices to be used : DBA decides which devices most suitable for storage of database contents. This is decided according to the system requirement. Performance and cost are factors for which tradeoff is performed. According to changing requirement, if DBA decides to change devices it is possible because of physical data independence.

  7. Functions Contd.. 3. Deciding users of database : It is DBA who decides which users can access which part of database. Passwords are given to different users as well as views are created to prevent unauthorized access.

  8. Functions Contd.. 4. Communication with the users : DBA remains in continuously touch with users of database so that according to their requirements views can be changed.

  9. Functions Contd.. 5. Deciding software to be used : DBA decides the software that will be the best suitable for the system. Like hardware, cost and performance are the factors to be considered.

  10. Functions Contd.. 6. Deciding the backup procedure : Keeping security in mind, a duplicate copy of important data is maintained so that in case of accidental loss of data recovery can be maintained. It is DBA who decides which data is to be backed up. Frequency of backup and no. of backups are also decided by DBA.

  11. Functions Contd.. 7. Deciding the recovery procedure : It is DBA who decides how data will be reconstructed in case of accidental loss. Different recovery procedures are available like logs, checkpoints etc.
