  5. 10 ways a Historian is Like a Detective

  6. We are going to read two quotes – one from a detective, one from a historian. After we read each quote, we will take a second to write out what we think are the THREE KEY IDEAS from each of the quotes. • Got it?

  7. Historian Or Detective? • “…Before you begin, it is very important to have a clear idea in your head about what topic you will be exploring. If you don’t have an idea for a topic, how can you research it? Once you have the topic defined, it is important to start your research. In today’s world, it is very easy to find research, but the hard part is finding trustworthy information. If the research you have collected is untrue or of a poor quality, that’s what your project is going to be like. Conversely, excellent research is going to allow you to show that you understand the topic, and will get you much better answer to your question.”

  8. Historian Or Detective • “…How we work is pretty much always the same. First we always ask ourselves, what is it we need to solve? When I’m ready to start, I have to identify all the different things that need to be researched to begin the investigation, and come up with as much quality information as is possible to begin. We know that if we aren’t careful with our investigation, things go wrong and we lose the criminals. Also, to find the perps and to guide our research and investigation, we only find the right answers if we are asking the right questions. If we do this right, it is only a matter of time before we make an arrest.”

  9. After looking at the two quotes, what are two or three main overlapping similarities between the detective and the historian?

  10. My Two: • Asking the right questions. • Doing good research.
