  1. Earth Quake Predictions Amanda and len

  2. What we have learned… • Earthquake prediction is hard, and the process to determine when an earthquake occurs is constantly changing. • There are many tools used to try to predict things about earthquakes. • The majority of earthquakes occur along fault lines, specifically convergent boundaries.

  3. Factors for Prediction Some factors that are used to predict earthquakes include: • Plate movement • Location in relation to fault lines • Patterns of occurrence of nearby earthquakes

  4. Our Original Top Ten List • Kathmandu, Nepal • Manila, Philippines • Seattle Washington • Delhi, India • Quito, Ecuador • San Francisco, United States • Athens, Greece • Detroit, United States • Istanbul, Turkey • BuenosAires, Argentina

  5. Our Revised Top Ten List • Manila, Philippines • Seattle, Washington, USA • Kanpur, India • Shanghai, China • Burgas, Bulgaria • Vamno, Russia • Liaoning, China • Niguero, Cuba • Viti Levu, Fiji • Mexico City, Mexico

  6. The “Most Likely” Location for the Next Big Earthquake Manila, Philippines Why? Because of the strong buffering area around it. Also we believe that the power earthquakes are moving west across the world. They first hit San Francisco, then moved to center of the pacific ocean, and then we believe it will hit Manila, Philippians.

  7. What have you learned about earthquakes and earthquake prediction? We have learned that it is very hard to predict when an earthquake will happen, and that many tools and resources, such as satellites, are used to help in this process. It is hard to determine when and where an earthquake will occur, but we have learned that research is helping to better our knowledge on this subject.

  8. What factors influence earthquake prediction? Factors that influence earthquake prediction include movement at plate boundaries, specifically convergent boundaries. This can predict if an earthquake will occur soon. Another factor is how far away from a plate boundary a city sits. This can predict if the city could have a high or low magnitude earthquake.

  9. Where on Earth do most of the really big earthquakes strike? Most of the really big earthquakes occur on convergent plate boundaries because a large amount of plate movement occurs there. This is why many earthquakes occur in California. It is due to the San Andreas fault.
