  21. ATP Synthesis • 1.Electrons are transferred from NADH, through a series of electron carriers, to O2. • 2.Transfer of electrons bycarriers generates a (H+) gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane. • 3. H+ diffuses back across the inner mitochondrial membrane, ATP is synthesized.

  23. How does ATP synthase work? • Works like a rotar. Every time three protons are pumped through the channel, the F1 subunit rotates 120 degrees.

  24. What happens at the end of electron transport? • The overall electron chain transport reaction is: • 2 H+ + 2 e- + 1/2 O2 ---> H2O + energy • Notice that 2 hydrogen ions, 2 electrons, and an oxygen molecule react to form as a product, water with energy released in an exothermic reaction.
