  3. Original Plan • Confederate Generals PGT Beauregard and Albert Johnston launched a surprise attack on Union forces to force them away from the Tennessee River and into a swamp. • General Johnston is killed during the first day of the battle.

  5. The Battle • During the battle the Confederate forces became confused and lost focus on the original goal. • Union General Ulysses Grant reorganized and counterattacked forcing the Confederate Forces to retreat.

  7. Effects • Union Victory • Was one of the bloodiest battles of the US Civil War. (Largest up to this point.) • Opened the way for Union forces to invade Mississippi.
