  4. Howwasfamilylifelike? IN EARLY TIMES, under the Kingdom and the Republic: (600 BCE to about 1c CE) Before the Imperial Age, in very early Roman times, a typical Roman family included unmarried children, married sons and their families, other relatives, and family slaves. Under the Kingdom, the ruler of the family was the oldest male. That could be the father, the grandfather, or perhaps even an uncle. His title was pater familias. The pater familias led religious ceremonies, taught his sons how to farm, and made all the important decisions. This word was law as far as his family was concerned. He owned the property, and had total authority, the power of life and death, over every member of his household. Even when his children became adults, he was still the boss. But, he was also responsible for the actions of any member of his household. He could order a child or an adult out of his house. If anyone in his household committed a crime, he could be punished for something his family did. It was not against the law for the head of the house to put a sick baby out to die or to sell members of his family into slavery. However, the Romans expected a pater familias to treat his family fairly. There were no laws to stop him from treating them unfairly, but there was social pressure.

  5. WhatdidRomanswear? What clothes did men wear in Roman times? Men wore a knee-length tunic (chilton), either sleeveless or short-sleeved. Roman men wore a cloak over their tunic, which was like a wide shawl that was draped over the shoulder and carefully wrapped around the body. Important Romans dressed in a long robe called a toga. What clothes did women wear? Women wore a longer tunic which was often ankle-length. Over this the women wore a stola which was a full length from neck to ankle, high- waisted and fastened at the shoulders with clasps. Rich women wore long tunics made from expensive cotton or silk. They also wore lots of jewelry and make-up, strong scent and elaborate hairstyles. They had specially trained slaves to help them dress. arrange their hair and put make up on their faces.

  6. WhattoysdidRomanshave? Toys - Children liked to play ball games, and boys in particular liked playing with marbles, and a game called “knuckleboard”, which is similar to the modern game of “jacks”. Other pastimes included playing with kites and ball games.

  7. RomanArmy!!! The Roman Army (Legion) The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers called legions. There were over 5,000 soldiers in a legion. Each legion had its own number, name, badge and fortress. There were about 30 legions around the Roman Empire, three of which were based in Britain at Caerleon, Chester and York.Tombstones at Chester indicate that some men joined the legions young; two men had been only fourteen when they had joined up.A legion had commanders, officers and ordinary soldiers. There were also doctors, engineers and other workers

  8. Roman Kings! The first three kings of Rome - It was under the Roman Kings that the Roman ability to create an empire of sorts first came to the fore, even though any original intentions will hardly have been of an imperial nature. In all there was said to have been seven kings of Rome covering a period of over two hundred years. The first king of Rome was the mythical Romulus (753-715 BC), the fabled founder, was the first. To him is attributed the founding, the extension to four of the Roman hill, - the Capitoline, Aventine, Caelian and Quirinal -, and the infamous rape of the Sabine women. The second king of Rome, NumaPompilius (715-673 BC) , owing to the influence of his adviser, the nymph and prophetess Egeria, enjoyed a peaceful reign. The third king, however, TulliusHositilius (673 - 642 BC), was responsible for the destruction of Alba Longa and the removal of its inhabitants to Rome.
With the literal destruction of this opponent they took over the sacred festivals of Latium and all the regional prestige and status that came with it.

  9. RomanGods They believed that each god had specific powers and controlled parts of the world. They believed the gods showed their unhappiness by sending earthquakes, hailstorms, and other natural disasters. The main god was Jupiter. He was similar to the Greek god, Zeus. They were both gods of the sky and would throw lightning bolts if they became angry. For each of the gods and goddesses the Romans built temples.
