  1. What are the experiences of Cameron Russell? (period 3) • got a free dress; got off of a parking ticket – because of her looks • Insecurity – • Has won a “genetic lottery” and has benefit from her genetics, most of all, her race and her gender • The images she creates for her job are not her, but constructions of her • Partly lives an illusion – there’s her external life and her internal life • She was already modeling before she got her period • She had never worn a bikini until she became a model • She was uncomfortable in many shots • Did not have a boyfriend until later in life • Uncomfortable, nervous, insecure • Realistic and humble • Is concerned about what others think (sensitive)

  2. What is the experience of Cameron Russell? (period 4) • She’s insecure • Her pictures are constructed; she says they are not “her” • She became a model because of a legacy of values • She won a “genetic lottery” (white, shiny hair, tall/slender, female) • People gave her free things (dress, avoided a driving ticket) • Her coworkers (other models) are what she describes as “the most insecure” • Modeling for 10 years • Was “scouted” • She has very little choice • At work, she lives in an imaginary world • Being a model isn’t as easy as one thinks • Had to get a fake tan for work • She hadn’t worn a bikini until she became a model • She hadn’t had a boyfriend….. • She’s self-conscious, she is concerned about what others think • She is honest • She is humble • She was nervous • She is “one of the biggest benificiaries of a legacy of gender and racial oppression”

  3. What is the experience of Cameron Russell? (period 7) • She feels image is superficial, but also powerful • She feels the images created for her job are not really her they are “constructions” of her • She is insecure (as are most of her colleagues) • She was treated differently because of how she looks (ex. escaping police, she got a dress for free when she had forgotten her wallet) • She changed in to modest clothes – she doesn’t want to be seen as “different” just because of her looks • Confident, courageous • She was “scouted” and she won a “genetic lottery” (slim, tall, white, female) • She cares what other people think • She had to fake tan for her job • For her job, she has to think about how she looks each day • Outside of her job she focuses more on the internal • She had to grow up quickly – did not have a boyfriend, wore a bikini later
