Hmm… What is Batch Processing? In batch processing over a period of time, a group of transactions are collected, entered, processed and the batch results are produced. Batch processing is the processing of these batch results (number of jobs) simultaneously from start to finish without user intervention.
Advantages • It allows sharing of computer resources among many user. • It shifts the time of job processing to when the computing resources are less busy. • It avoids idling of computing resources with minute-by-minute human interaction and supervision, therefore, increasing the productivity of the computer. • Batch processing is economical when a large volume of data must be processed.
Disadvantages • It requires sorting, reduces timeliness, in some cases, and requires sequential file organization. • Since master files are updated only periodically, there is a potential for master files to become quite out-of-date if transactions are not processed frequently. • It requires large, expensive computers and a highly trained team.
Example One An example of batch processing is the way that credit card companies process billing. The customer does not receive a bill for each separate credit card purchase but one monthly bill for all of that month's purchases. The bill is created through batch processing, where all of the data are collected and held until the bill is processed as a batch at the end of the billing cycle.
Example Two Examination Report Card System At the Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls, the students do not receive several reports for each subject but one report for the term’s work. The report is created through batch processing, where all of the grades are collected and held until the report is processed as a batch at the end of the school term.
