UNDP Project: Towards Sustainability in the Czech Republic, Building National Capacities for Sustainable Development - aimed at strengthening national capacities in the CR to implement and actively pursue goals of sustainable development - proposal for NSDS in 2001 (rejected – missed comprehensive treatment of social and economic dimensions) Ministry of the Environment initiative - proposal for NSDS in 2002 (rejected – too environmental and scientific) 1998-2002: environmental „NSDS‘s“

  4. 2003: establishment of institutional framework for sustainable development • Governmental Council for Sustainable Development - effective from August 1, 2003 - standing advisory body to the government - chaired by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs (3 vice-chairmen: Minister of Industry and Trade, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Minister of the Environment) - 28 members (state administration as well as major groups) - specialized working bodies

  5. 2004: elaboration and adoption of the Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Czech Republic • Framework Table of Contents (December 2003) • First draft (March 2004) • Roundtables in regions (April 2004) • Forum on Sustainable Development (May 2004) • Final inter-ministerial consultations (September-October 2004) • Final draft approved by the Governmental Council for Sustainable Development (November 15, 2004) • Strategy for Sustainable Development of the CR adopted by Government (December 8, 2004)

Strategy for Sustainable Development of the CR (introduction) • elaborated through broad discussions throughout society • aimed at eliminating any imbalance between the pillars of sustainable development • designed to ensure the highest attainable quality of life for the present generation as well as of future generations • framework for the processing of sectoral conceptual documents and strategic decision-making and cooperation with partners • timeframe up to the year 2014

Strategy for Sustainable Development of the CR (content) • Situation in the CR • Components of the Strategy - Economic pillar: strengthening the competitiveness of the economy - Environmental pillar: protecting nature, the environment, natural resources and the landscape, environmental limits - Social pillar: strengthening social cohesion and stability - Research and development, education - European and international context - Good governance

  8. Strategy for Sustainable Development of the CR (content) • Each component of the Strategy encompasses: - main challenge - strategic goals - partial goals targeting selected problem areas - indicators

Strategy for Sustainable Development of the CR (monitoring and implementation) • Regular monitoring by the Governmental Council for Sustainable Development • First report on implementation by November 2005 • Revision and update of the Strategy by November 2007 Although the Strategy for Sustainable Development has been adopted by the government only recently, it is being implemented since the very beginning of the process of its preparation and approval
