  2. ITS IT’S Its – of or relating to it or itself. • The baby looked at its reflection in the mirror. It’s –contraction of 1. it is2. it has (used of a lifeless thing, a plant, a person or animal or an abstract entity. • It’s a big building. Tip: no exceptions – It’s can be used in place of it is such as, “It’s a beautiful day.”

  3. LATER LATTER Later - subsequent to a reference in time. Subsequently later. • He’s going to the store but will be back later. Latter- Being the second of two persons or things mentioned. • He preferred oranges to apples, because the latter were not as juicy as the former. Tip:to remember Latter with two (tt) is used to describe two items Later with one (t) is later in time.

  4. Lay Lie Lay - to put or set down, to place for rest or sleep. • Lay the baby down for his nap. Lie – a statement of untruth, to assume a horizontal position(lie down) • Lie down and rest. Tip: Lay – You are doing this TO something. Lie – If you lie you are the one doing the action. It is not being done to something else.

  5. Less Fewer Less– of lower rank, degree or importance, more limited in quantity. • Do not think less of her because she is small. Fewer – a smaller number of persons or things. • There are fewer students today than yesterday. Tip: Use fewer to describe countable things. Use less to describe uncountable quantities, collective amounts, and degree.  These terms are not interchangeable.

  6. Liable Libel Liable – Legally bound or obligated, as to make good any loss or damage that occurs in a transaction; responsible. • You are liable for the damage caused by your actions. Libel - a false and malicious published statement (or pictures, etc) that damages somebody's reputation. • He put derogatory pictures of his friend on facebook. Tip: Liable means subject to, obligated to, or responsible for something. Libel refers to a false publication that damages a person's reputation.
