Exploring Poetry: Figurative Language and Imagery in Literary Texts

In this unit plan, students in 7th grade will dive into the structure and elements of poetry through understanding figurative language such as personification, metaphors, and similes. They will analyze how these elements contribute to a poem's meaning and how an author's sensory language creates imagery, mood, and appeals to the senses. With various reading and writing activities throughout the week, students will compile their best works into a poetry booklet, enhancing their appreciation for poetic forms, including free verse, haiku, limericks, and more.
