  1. Open Door Days Getting Parent Involved in Literacy Education And In Their Children’s Educational Community

  2. To Be in Your Child’s Memories Tomorrow, You Have to Be In Their Lives Today. -Author Barbara Johnson

  3. Different Schools…. • What Does Parent Involvement Look Like at Your School?

  4. What it Looks Like

  5. Why? • Open Door days were created to fulfill a need. The need was and still is to strengthen and build the relationship between teachers, students and parents. Additionally, there is a need for parents to actually see what is taking place during the school day and to take a larger role in their children’s educations.

  6. Who? • We have put together a PIC – Parent Involvement Committee…it includes teachers, administrators, and parents. • Who would you include?

  7. Where? • Let’s get those parents into the school building! Let’s get them into the public library! Let’s get them in to all events, even events that don’t include their own children! • Where were your parents be most comfortable getting together? Where should there be parents, that there aren’t?

  8. When? • Our big program, Open Door Days, is during the school day, once a month, on the teacher’s schedule. Our 4th and 5th grade teachers use lessons (on the ning, for your use and modification) that are based on our curriculum and deal with many literacy-based skills, such as: comprehension, rereading, questioning, writing in response to reading, writing in response to math, test taking strategies and skills, and summer programs that are available in the community (that’s May).

  9. When continued…. • Our 6th graders are using a book Pass It On, that helps connect the dots between school now and future goals, such as college, trade school, and careers. We were able to use title I funds to pay for these books and the author, Sarah Klerk gave us a wonderful discount and came to speak to our parents on our opening night event. • You can find more information and contact Sarah at: http://www.passitonresources.com/

  10. When continued…part 3 • Even though we thought that having parents in during the day, would be a great way for them to see what really goes on, it has been difficult for many. • We have begun social events to help parents feel more comfortable coming to school: a tailgate event, fashion show, job application night, NCAA field day, talent show.

  11. What When would work for your school?

  12. What? • You can download and use, or modify any of the lessons that I have uploaded to the IRC’s ning, but here is an example of the lessons we use:
