  1. LexisNexis Congressional Legislative Histories • Legislative Histories, Complete, All Public Laws, 1999-present (basic subscription) • Legislative Histories, Complete, Major Public Laws Only, 1984-1998 (basic subscription) • Legislative Histories, Abbreviated, All Public Laws, 1969-1983 (basic subscription) • Legislative Histories “on the fly” (Serial Set, CRDC, and Hearings Digital Products)

  2. Creating On-the-Fly Legislative Histories : Step 1 Step 1: Search for citations linking enacted bill numbers with public law numbers • If you know the PL number, bill number, or Statutes-at- Large citation, use the Search by Number form to find congressional publications related to a bill or law (try sample search 90 PL 449) • Tip: Be sure to pull down the correct search task in the Search by Number form; the task option you want says “find congressional publications related to a bill or law”

  3. Creating On-the-Fly Legislative Histories : Step 1 (cont.) • If you don’t know have a citation number, do a keyword search using the information you do have on the Advanced form combined with a search for “PL” in all fields except full-text (try sample search “Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 AND PL”) • Tip: Remember to change the date restriction from “previous 2 years” to “all available dates” or a date range that specifically matches your desired search results

  4. Creating On-the-Fly Legislative Histories: Step 2 Step 2: Search for other publications related to search results obtained in Step 1. Examples of on-the-fly search strategies: • Search on enacted bill number • Replicate successful Step 1 keyword search without using the “AND PL” component; try expanding date range to retrieve publications from earlier Congresses and winnow results using Focus search feature • Open individual records and use Find More Like This feature to retrieve publications with related subject terms

  5. More Strategies to Create On-the-Fly Legislative Histories • Search for enacted bill number in all fields including full-text • Search the full text of legislative reports for the enacted bill number to find bill numbers for related bills • Expand your research to find additional publications citing bills related to the enacted bill

  6. More Tips • As you find bill numbers, Public laws numbers, and Statutes-At-Large citations, return to the Search by Number form to execute new searches • Citation numbers found by searching in all fields except full text may be searched from the Advanced or Basic forms, as long as the citation format is not changed • Don’t forget to include CIS legislative histories in your search for laws enacted from 1969 forward.
