About AMCAS • What does AMCAS do? • Provides an online medical school application and distributes your application to the medical schools you designate • Verifies academic records and calculates an AMCAS GPA • Collects & distributes letters of recommendation to the medical schools you designate • Facilitates criminal background checks for accepted applicants

Application Timing (Cont.d) • Application deadlines are posted on the AMCAS website and within the online application • Get your official transcripts sent early (summer). • 2013 Processing Fees: • The processing fee (includes 1 school) is $160. • It’s $34 for each additional school you designate.

Application Timing Most students will apply in the summer: June, July, August. It can take AMCAS four to six weeks to process your application. The deadline is Nov. 1st, but you should apply well in advance (summer). AMCAS Verification Transcripts Processing From the date of submission, verification can take up to 6 weeks to be completed Verification consists of: Line-by-line comparison of each coursework entry to corresponding item on official transcript(s) Normalization of GPA, including calculation of AMCAS GPAs (Cumulative, BCPM [Biology-Chemistry-Physics-Math], and AO [All Other]) Academic Change Requests • Once the application is submitted and all required official transcripts are received, the application will join the verification queue • Use the Official Transcript Request Form • Applicants should consult the AMCAS Instruction Manual and video tutorials to ensure that all coursework is entered accurately, including AP credit and study abroad courses

Post-submission Changes • Only these items can be updated or changed in the application after it has been submitted: • Required and Alternate IDs • Name, including Full Legal Name, Preferred Name, and Alternate Names • Contact Information, including Permanent and Preferred Mailing Addresses • Alternate Contact Information • Date of Birth, Birth Address, and Sex • Letters of Evaluation (only additions of up to 10 total letter entries and notifying AMCAS of a letter no longer being sent) • Next MCAT testing date • Add Medical Schools and change existing Program Types (deadlines, fees, and restrictions apply) • Release application information to school-designated pre-health advisor
Multiple Accept Data • Medical schools cannot view the number or names of other schools that an applicant has applied to • Beginning February 10 of the application cycle, schools will be able to see Multiple Accept Data, meaning that for applicants a school has accepted, other schools where that applicant is also currently holding an acceptance will be visible • Beginning April 1 of the application cycle, medical schools have access to the National Acceptance Report, which lists all applicants with a current Acceptance or Matriculated action • See the Traffic Rules for Admission Officers for more info
Criminal Background Checks • Participating medical schools have Criminal Background Checks on their accepted or waitlisted applicants facilitated by the AAMC • Applicants will receive an e-mail notification from our vendor, Certiphi Screening, Inc.,initiating the background check • Applicants will also have 10 calendar days to review their report for irregularities, after that time it will automatically be sent to the medical school(s) • There is no additional charge for this service
2012 Fee Assistance Program Benefits How to Apply Visit www.aamc.org/fap • Assists applicants who, without financial assistance, would be unable to take the MCAT or apply to medical schools through AMCAS • Reduction of MCAT Registration fee from $240 to $85 • Free copy of The Official Guide to the MCAT Exam & Complimentary access to MSAR Online • Waiver of AMCAS application fees for up to 14 medical schools • Benefits cannot be applied retroactively-- apply for fee assistance in advance of registering for the MCAT or submitting an AMCAS application Benefits are valid only for the calendar year in which the award is granted.
