  2. Month by Month • January-Lyndon B. Johnson was President • Malcolm X assassinated on February 21 • March – Civil Rights protests in Alabama become violent • 25,000 protesters march on Washington against the Vietnam War • May- Vietnam Protesters at Berkeley begins burning their draft cards • June – Anti-War Protests at the Pentagon

Month by Month • July – President Johnson increases troop numbers in Vietnam • August – Watts Riots in LA, 34 dead • September – Hurricane Betsy, $1 B damages, 76 dead, New Orleans • October – Pro-Vietnam protests in Washington DC, 25,000 participants • November – USA formally begins airlifting Cubans from Cuba, 250,000 total participants • December – The first controlled orbit of the earth is performed.

The Year in Review • 1965 was split by racial tensions and by the Vietnam War. • The US Government spent more time on the War than it did dealing with racial issues. • 1965 marked the birth of the true Counterculture movement, started at Berkeley University in California. • The Beatles give their first United States performance.
