  1. ??? Do Now: How does a cow see? 6/13/11 Standard 6b: Students know that for an object to be seen, light emitted by it must be detected by the eye Objective: Students will explain how the eyes see light and how the brain creates the image 6/13/11 17L 17R

  2. Today’s Agenda Do Now: How does a cow see? (15 min) 2. Notes: Vision has 5 steps (20 min) 3. You Do (10 min) 4. Vision Project Directions (10 min) 5. Finish Rough Draft and Begin Final Draft of Vision Project (65 min)

  3. Do Now: How does a cow see? (page 63) C D E B A Look at the cow eye and the parts that are labeled. Write a 4-5 sentence paragraph describing how the parts of the eye work together so that the cow can see the grass it eats. 17L

  4. Do Now: How does a cow see? page 63 C B D E A ANSWER: The white light strikes the green grass, which reflects the green light waves. The green light passes through the CORNEA (A) and the PUPIL (C). The IRIS (B) opens and closes to let more light in or to keep too much light out. The green light then passes through the LENS (D) and gets focused onto the RETINA (E). The cones absorb the green light.

  5. ??? Do Now: Inside the Cow Eye 6/13/11 Standard 6b: Students know that for an object to be seen, light emitted by it is detected by the eye Objective: Students will explain how the eyes and brain work together to see an object 6/13/11 Notes: Vision has 5 steps! You Do: 1. 2. 3. 17L 17R

  6. Notes: Vision has 5 steps 5. Homer’s brain receives the signal from the optic nerves. It turns the image right side up.  2. The blue doughnut ABSORBS the colors red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, and violet. Homer won’t see these colors!!! 3.The blue doughnut REFLECTS the blue light waves out and into his cornea, pupil, and lens. 1. The lamp shines visible light (7 colors) onto the blue doughnut. 4.Homer’s lens FOCUSES the light onto the retina. The image is upside down. The retina changes the light into electrical signals and sends them to the brain by the optic nerves. 17 R

  7. You Do #1 1. What happens to the white light that shines on the white flower? 2. What parts of the eye does the light pass through to get from outside the eye to the back of the eye? Eye (Retina) 3. What does the retina do with the light? Visual Center of the brain Optic Nerve

  8. You Do #1 What happens to the white light that shines on the white flower? The white light strikes the white Flower. It is reflected back out and into the eye. 2. What parts of the eyedoes the light pass through to get from outside the eye to the back of the eye? The light passes through the cornea, pupil, lens, and onto the retina. 3. What does the retina do with the light? The retina has rod and cone cells that absorb the light and turn it into an electrical impulse. This electrical impulse is sent to the brain through the optic nerve. Eye (Retina) Visual Center of the Brain Optic Nerve

  9. Since we don’t want to be like Homer…we will stop talking about eating donuts, and start talking about fruits and veggies!!!

  10. What is your favorite fruit or vegetable??? Choose a fruit or veggie that is the color of one of the 7 colors of the spectrum.

  11. Vision Project: How do I see??? Objective: Students will explain how light, their eyes, and their brain work together to allow them to see their favorite fruit or vegetable. On page 17 R, we took notes on how Homer sees his donut. Now it is your turn to explain how you are able to see your favorite fruit or vegetable. Due Date: Thursday/Friday (June 16/ 17)

  12. 4.Homer’s lenses FOCUS the light onto the retina. The image is upside down. The retina turn this image into electrical signals and sends them to the brain by the optic nerves. 17 R

  13. Project Requirements: Include DETAILED information about each of the 5 steps of vision (from the light source to the brain.) 2. Include both pictures and written information. 3. All information needs to be correct and based on pages 38-64 in the textbook and/or our notes from pages 1L-17R in the notebook. 4. Include 10 vocabulary words from the word wall. Underline them. 5. Organize the information and pictures on the page so it is easy to understand. Use all white space, correct spelling and punctuation. Please copy on page 18R in notebook.
