This series of lectures delves into the concept of control societies as theorized by philosophers like Deleuze and Guattari. Starting on November 12, we discuss Deleuze's analysis of control, followed by Massumi's examination of fear and its societal implications. Later sessions tackle Guattari's concepts and the critical roles of art, architecture, and media in contemporary society. We will analyze Marx's production methods, Foucault's notions of disciplinary power, and the shift from confinement to control in modern structures.

Controle We’re in the midst of a general breakdown of all sites of confinement. Control societies are taking over. They are ultrarapid forms of apparently free-floating control.
Disciplinary Societies All sites have a common language, its analogical. Confinement is about molds, different moldings 2nd generation machinery: thermodynamic machines, anti-entropy, anti sabotage. Control Societies It forms a system of varying geometry whose language is digital (CODES). Controls are a modulation, a self-transmuting molding. 3rd generation machinery: anti-noise, piracy and viral contamination. What happens?
Businesses replace factories, continuous education replaces schools, electronic tagging replaces prison, new medicine (think functional foods) replaces the doctor, new ways of manipulating money (hedge funds) replaces the factory.
