Background: Seaweed is one of the significant components of marine aquaculture industry that ranks third after shrimp and tuna among fisheries exports.Currently,total seaweed production is increasing annually as technology advances and more species are cultured and more areas come into production primarily centered in the Southern part of the Philippines. Since 1970’s 30% of the seaweeds export come from Region IX. It is no wonder why the people of Calauag attracted and began to look up to the sea as main provider of life sustenance.

  3. 1995-Typhoon Rosing brought national attention to the coastal town as the most devastated town in Quezon - houses were uprooted the place was declared as a calamity area. - Government and private organizations aid did not last. - People wallow into deeper quagmire of poverty - Fish and other aquamarine products became scarce and unavailable. - situation became worse as some local fishermen resorted to rampant dynamite blasting and use of cyanide as an alternative means of fishing destroying coral reefs and marine life.

Two girls from with angelic task visited their Aunt Rosita Garbolo, a seaweed farmer in Daet Camarines Norte who helped them in the nitty-gritties of seaweed post harvest activities helped their relative. • Having familiar with the thing called “seaweed” they bring home five “5 dipa”of the sea plant and monoline. • When the two girls reached home they tied the plants to the monoline and let them float in the sea. • Following their Aunt Rosa’s instruction after 60 days they lifted the line and found out the seaweeds have grown healthy and robust. • Elated by the girl’s produce one of their aunt helped them brought the seaweeds to market and the two girls realized sales proceeds enough to buy folding bed for each.

  5. Happy about the girl’s enterprise try-out their parent’s followed it .They procured seedlings,planted it and harvested it. PROMOTION OF SEAWEED INDUSTRY IN CALAUAG • The Mother being the Barangay Captain of Sinag found herself telling the seaweeds story and sharing plants to her constituents • Mr. Ernesto Porfura, a volunteer worker of the office of the Mayor and former development of the Phil. Rural Reconstruction Movement got interested in seaweeds industry.He made an arrangement with BFAR Regional Office to provide seedling for the industry.

  6. Together w/Mr. Ramon Querubin of Lucena, they conducted seminars on seaweed farming in Barangay Villa San Isidro, Dapdap. PROMOTION OF SEAWEED INDUSTRY IN CALAUAG • When they visited Barangay Sinag they were surprised when they found the seaweeds that were planted by Garbolo family. • They identified the seaweeds species and shared the technology to the people of Barangay Sinag.

Feasibility of Seaweeds Industry in Calauag Quezon • Due to positive inputs the Congress man of the 4th District allocated P1M from his countryside Development Fund • Each town sharing One Hundred Thousand Pesos • Barangays Sinag and Dapdap became the supplier of seaweed seedlings in the 4thdistrict of Quezon Province • Seaweeds then became the top most promising industries in the Calauag

Executive Order no. 17 Creation of Municipal Seaweed Council • 2004 July 1-Calauag Mayor issued the above EO and allocated and released the funds amounting to P250,000 for the seaweed industry of the Municipality • Series of training were conducted for the above purpose • Assistance of SIAP or Seaweed Industry Ass. Of the Philippines were sought in identiying the diseases and recommended measures to prevent it.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW Seaweeds industry in Calauag is now gaining momentum. • 224 MT production was registered with the help of CARE Philippines. & other NGO’s. • Fisherfolks are now aware of their responsibility towards environmental protection and sustainable development of their marine resources.

  10. Trainings were conducted to 40 participants/beneficiaries. Seaweed Nursery were able to produced 20MT of seedlings . 12MT were dispersed to the beneficiaries. • Today seaweeds has significantly transformed the Barangay Sinag . What used to be their small wooden house have become concrete, larger and stable structures
