White families • After the men left the women and daughters to make all the money for their families. • They had to do all the work the men usually did like work on plantations. • Families over fight over slavery (divides them) • Sons telling their pro union family he is joining the confederate army. • Brothers on opposite sides of the battle. • Men died in war so it hurt families.

  3. Confederates • They had scarce food because the Union cut off food supply. • They were desperate and made anything into everything. • Such as beer made from corn, potatoes, sassafras, and pine needles. • Vinegar became apple cider. • In genral much more rough for them.

  4. Black families • Saw it as an opportunity to get reunited with their family. • When union entered south and they knew they would be free 100,000 black men from Virginia fled to army camps. • Some who didn’t flee were abused worse than normal due to frustration of the others leaving.
