  1. The uses of Learning Technologies & Social Media in the Fine Arts Section, Nepean College, Kingswood

  2. Overview: • Fine Arts courses are hands-on, classroombased, so the technologies we use are to enhance classroom teaching and/or facilitate better communication. • We will show 3 ways in which we are making use of wikis, plus take a look at our blog, and the flickr and youtube pages it links to.

  3. What is a wiki? • As many will know, a wiki is an easy-to edit website that does not require skills in html to operate. • Wikis can have a range of permissions and you can choose who can view or edit the site.

  4. The 3 uses of wikis in the Fine Art section: • 1. as a promotional website • 2. as an information repository and communication tool • a: between staff • b: between staff and students • 3. As a collaborative classroom tool for students.

  5. 1. wiki as a promotional website The ceramicsnepean wiki: promoting the activities of the ceramic section to our students and the broader community http://ceramicsnepean.westernsydneyinstitute.wikispaces.net/

  6. 2. Wikis as an information repository and a communication tool • The fine art staff sandpit wiki is a private space for staff to practice their wiki skills, access important documents, and give feedback on section matters. • http://fasandpit.westernsydneyinstitute.wikispaces.net/ • The finearts-studentinfo wiki is a central site for students to access important information and documents, and an easy way to broadcast information to students across all courses. • http://finearts-studentinfo.westernsydneyinstitute.wikispaces.net/

  7. 3. Wiki as a classroom tool • Classroom wikis are also being explored in areas such as printmaking and professional practice. I will show you the wiki I use with my second year fine art photography students http://photomajor.westernsydneyinstitute.wikispaces.net/

  8. The blog, the flickr page, and the youtube channel • http://www.wsifineart.blogspot.com/ • News and views for our students and the broader community • A “one stop shop” that links our web resources.

  9. In conclusion………………… • Some benefits we have found include: • All the great stuff we do is archived and accessible to others • better flow of information between staff, and between staff and students • Assists teachers and students in being organised! • Helps staff and students maintain technical currency. • Human tech support and encouragement is readily available in the form of individual or group training, or telephone support: and we greatly appreciate this!
