  1. Pollination & Fertilization Mrs. Taylor 6th grade Science

  2. In the Life Cycle of a Flowering Plant there are two very important processes – Pollination & Fertilization.

  3. Pollination During the process of pollination a pollen cell (male sex cell) from the anther of the stamen must be moved to the stigma of the pistil.

  4. Pollination Diagram The Red arrow shows the pollen from the anther moving to the stigma (top of) the pistil. This movement of pollen is called Pollination.

  5. Pollinators Pollination occurs with the help of Pollinators like…. • Bees • Butterflies • Birds • Other insects Wind also helps pollination occur by carrying pollen from one flower to another

  6. Fertilization Once the pollen has been moved to the stigma and pollination has occurred the process of Fertilization can begin.

  7. Fertilization • First a pollen tube is created that allows the pollen to move down the style of the pistil to the ovary. • Once in the ovary the pollen cell ( male sex cell) can join with the ovules (female egg cell). The joining of these two sex cells is called fertilization. • Once the ovule is fertilized a seed will develop!

  8. Watch fertilization in action! http://www.ashfieldgirls.org/science/plant_reproduction/fertilisation.htm

  9. Watch this video clip to review the parts of a flower, pollination, and fertilization.

  10. It is Quiz time  If you don’t feel ready yet and would like to review one more time click here to return to the start of the presentation. If you are ready click here.

  11. Question #1 When pollen is moved from the anther to the stigma it is called? Fertilization Pollination

  12. Question #2 Which of the following are not pollinators? Birds Bees Wind Cats

  13. Question #3 The joining of the female sex cell (the ovule) and the male sex cell (the pollen cell) is called? Fertilization Pollination

  14. Question #4 What forms to allow the pollen to move to the ovary? Pollen Tube Egg Seed Anther

  15. Question #5 What forms after the ovule is fertilized? Pollen Tube Egg Seed Anther
