SC 2 Scope • Standardisation of graphic character sets and their characteristics, associated control functions, their coded representation for information interchange, and code extension techniques. Excluded: audio and picture coding • Two WGs • WG2 16 bit and 32 bit coding • 10646 • WG3 7 bit and 8 bit coding • coded character sets - 646, 6937, 8859 • code structure and code extension technique - 2022, 4873 • control functions - 6429 • Registration procedure of coded character sets - 2375 ISO/IEC JTC 1 Cultural & Linguistic Adaptability & User Interface Technical Direction

SC 2 Achievements Since the last JTC 1 Plenary in January 1999: • Six amendments and one technical corrigendum to ISO/IEC 10646-1: 1993 were published. • Five amendments of ISO/IEC 10646-1:1993 were progressed to IS. • Six FPDAMs of ISO/IEC 10646-1:1993 were progressed to FDAM. • 6937 and 8859-11 Latin/Thai were progressed to FCD. • 8859-7 Latin/Greek was progressed to CD. Opportunities and Risks • Opportunities • 16 bit and 32 bit code including UTF-8 and UTF-16 • Sole standard 10646 (Unicode) adapted by all PCs, Unixes and the Internet • Risks • 7 bit and 8 bit codes • ISO (ASCII) vs EBCDIC, SC2 vs ITU-T vs TC 46 vs Vendors • There are many vendor dialects based on national or application oriented versions. • Strategy • Rapid development to capture market needs and cooperation with industry (Unicode) are mandatory for the success.
