  1. The NAHAWASC IP intends to address the seemingly increasing frequency/amplitude of meteorological and hydrological extreme events throughout the watershed. This will be done in a context of environmental change, statistical uncertainty, and societal effects and needs. The NAHAWASC consortium approximately contains 45 participant organisations distributed throughout 18 nations.We are rapidly gaining the strength required for an ambitious interdisciplinary approach towards the imp-rovement of hazard predic-tability and societal readi-ness.   2. 1 2 .. .. 10 Upstream Lowland Coastal Conceptual structure of the NAHAWASC IP. Verticallyoriented thematic subprojects cut across the horizontallyoriented geographic regions of the watershed. All cross-sections should be addressed with work packagesthat are obliged to deliver an action plan for how to communicate across thematic and geographical interfaces. NAHAWASC Structure and Content • Risk assessment, crisis analysis, crisis management and mitigation • Hydrology, hydraulics, flood prediction • Steep slope events, rheology and complex flow • Hydrologic transportation of sediments, solutes and hazardous substances • Geology, geomorphology, sedimentology and land-use management • Post-flood mitigation • Dam- and hydropower security • Risk in a mathematical/statistical perspective • Information society technologies, geographical information systems, and real time expert systems • Meta-research providing feedback on NAHAWASC quality

  3. Although the NAHAWASC IP is growing strong, additional resources are needed. This is particularly true within the sub-issues of:2. Hydrology, hydraulics, flood prediction5.
