  1. The Open Ended Response

  2. NOT AS SCARY, INTIMIDATING OR AS BAD AS YOU THINK IT IS… It’s just logically answering a question in a paragraph and backing it up with proof.

  3. Why do I need to learn OERs? • STAAR test. You need to pass to graduate. • LIFE!!! • OERs require you to read something, understand what you read, analyze it, give your opinion about something, and BACK IT UPwith evidence. All things you should be able to do if you want to be successful in life. • (Including daily life, such as making sound arguments against your mom when she’s trying to ground you unfairly.)

  4. Three Parts to a good short answer: • In short answers, you are looking for three important parts. If it has all 3, it is a score 2! • T = think: Think about what you already know; analyze the question to see exactly what it is asking. • A=ANSWER: Restate the question in your answer and include YOUR analysis! (your opinion) It helps if it comes from the quote! • P= PROOF: quote (text) from the story. You’ve got to have text evidence to be a success! (TEXT = ANY words from the story) • E = EXPLANATION: Connect your opinion and proof with similar words or ideas. Connecting your ideas is what will get you a 2! Connect to your answer with similar words. Use lead-ins! • When we score short answers, look for these three parts in each one. YOU MUST MAKE SURE ALL 3 PARTS CONNECT to prove your point!

  5. SCORING… • Scores from 0 to 3 • 0 is Insufficient • 1 is Partially Sufficient • 2 is Sufficient • 3 is Exemplary • Everyone can score a 2!

  6. THE CROSSOVER… • Use BOTH stories in your answer. • Include a quote from both stories. • Strategy: Find something the stories have in common. Find two quotes that connect and then write your answer to fit those quotes. • Highlight possible quotes while you read the stories. • Make sure you explain how both quotes prove your answer as well!

  7. BE SURE TO… • Find proof that supports an opinion! Then you can pull your opinion out of that quote. • Have an opinion! Your answer’s got to have something to prove. • Compose your answer by restating the question, offering your opinion, and a reason for your opinion. • The primary conflict in “Breakfast in Virginia” was ___________. • In “The Crystal Night,” the German soldiers could be described as _________. • Make sure you include all parts of a question. Have a reason for your opinion. Say “because…” • Find your quotes first! That will help you make a strong connection between your quote and your answer. • Focus on just one idea to prove. Every idea you’ve got you have to have proof for.

  8. YOUR QUESTION: (GET AS MUCH DONE IN CLASS AS POSSIBLE – FINISH FOR HOMEWORK.) • Keeping in mind how he is viewed in the gaze of history, if Ender’s true identity was discovered on another planet in the year 1180 BSC, and he was put on trial for his war crimes of xenocide, would/should he be found guilty, or innocent? • Answer the question • Prove it with text evidence • Explain the connection between your answer and quote or provide more context for your answer • Draw a box around ten lines on notebook paper. Your answer needs to fit inside.
