Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will evaluate to what extent the Kennedy mystique helped or hindered the President both in domestic and foreign policy Announcement: Chapter 20 Test April 26 Drill: Examine the photo on page 681 and answer the following: 1. What 5 adjectives would you use to describe the mood of the mourners in the photo? 2. How do you think the mourners reflected the mood of the nation? Motivation: Did a lone assassin kill Kennedy or were the people on the “grassy knoll”?

  3. The New Frontier Ch. 20 Section 2 pages 677-682 The Camelot Years “ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country” Question: Explain the meaning of JFK’s quote from his inauguration in January 1961. Give 2 examples of what JFK means with his quote. Frequently on TV and the press protected his indiscretions

The Kennedy Mystique Critics argued he was of little substance Many Americans fascinated with the 1st family Many looked at the Kennedy administration as Camelot The Best and Brightest Appointed many young intellectuals and businesspeople to the cabinet, including his 35 year old brother to attorney general Question: Why do you think there was or is a Kennedy mystique? Give examples to support your claim.

The Promise of Progress Wanted new investment in science and space Had a difficult time with Capital Hill on passing legislation Lacked a popular mandate, since he won such a close election Got Congress to boost economy, build the national defense, provide international aid and fund a massive space program Question: For each of Kennedy’s successes above, explain what each one looked like during his Presidency.
