  4. Autotrophs • Autotrophs are organisms that produce their own glucose, mostly through photosynthesis. • Heterotrophs are organisms that obtain food by eating autotrophs or other heterotrophs. • All life depends on autotrophs!

  7. Basic Details of Photosynthesis • Photo is the Greek word for “light”. • Synthesis is the Greek word for “putting together. • “Using light to put something together.” • Overall equation: • 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 • Two part process: • Light Reactions and Calvin Cycle

Pigments • Chlorophylls are greenish pigments • There are several kinds of chlorophyll, the most important being chlorophyll "a". • Carotenoids are usually red, orange, or yellow pigments, and include the familiar compound carotene, which gives carrots their color. • Anthocyanins are usually red pigments. • Phycobilins are water-soluble pigments, and are therefore found in the cytoplasm, or in the stroma of the chloroplast. They occur only in Cyanobacteria and Rhodophyta.

  19. Basic Details of Anaerobic Respiration • C6H12O6 (glucose) 2 C3H6O3 (lactic acid) • No ETC • Just Glycolysis • In some plant cells and yeasts, fermentation produces CO2 and ethanol. The conversion of pyruvate to acetaldehyde generates CO2 and the conversion of acetaldehyde to ethanol
