  1. ACCS study day 19/9/2012 Toby Elkington ICM tutor Careers in ICM

  2. Key points • Single / dual CCTs • Complimentary specialities • Training time / exams

  3. CCTs • Piece of paper to show that you are “trained” in a specialty (ie can become a consultant)

  4. Historically • “Joint” CCT schemes • Intensivists almost all from anaesthetic backgrounds • Training time not extended, no structured exams

  5. Now • FICM • GMC approved curriculum • Multiple routes in from multiple specialities • Development of single and dual CCTs

  6. Routes in • Anaesthetic / Core medical / ACCS training all enable entrance into ICM ST3 • FFICM primary, BUT exempted if you have MRCP, FRCA primary or equivalent

  7. Options • Sole ICM from ST3 onwards and get CCT in just ICM • ST3 post in anaesthetics / emergency / renal / respiratory medicine AND an ST3 post in ICM enabling you to gain a dual CCT

  8. Specialist training • ST3/4 designed to fill gaps (ICM / medicine / anaesthetics) • ST5/6 further ICM along with special interests (paeds / cardiac / neuro) • FFICM exam • ST 7 consolidation year of entirely ICM

  9. Dual CCTs • As you are also training in a base specialty your training time will be extended to 8.5 years

  10. Current situation • Few non-anaesthetic intensivists (particularly in this region) • Very few single specialty ICM intensivist jobs nationally • Appointing to dual / single CCT ICM posts now • First sitting of exams this autumn

  11. The future • Much easier to do ICM with medicine • Better training • ? Expansion in single specialty jobs (Australian model)

  12. Current advice • Go for dual CCT • Aim for ST3 in base specialty THEN apply for ICM ST3 post • You will have one extra exam and slightly extend your training time

  13. Anaesthetic careers • Apply for ST3 anaesthesia! • 7 year program • Options in paeds / pain / cardiac
