How can stage directions affect a character’s role and improve overall understanding of the play? How do stage directions help the reader understand a play? Writer’s Notebook Activity: On Monday, September 28, 1942, Anne wrote that after arguing with Mrs. Frank, Mrs. Van Daan looked like a coarse red-faced fishwife. Anne wished she could draw her like this. Make the drawing for Anne in your notebook.

After that time, Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, handicapped people, and others became the prime targets for persecution. During his dictatorship from 1933–1945, nearly 6,000,000 Jews were murdered. Pretend you were alive in 1940 and know what you know today. Write the president of the United States a letter about what you think his country should do.
